Erie Insurance Assists Mercyhurst University in Creating Innovation District

Staff Writer | October 14, 2016

There are challenges that face this once-thriving manufacturing center of Erie, Pa., as it attempts to re-chart its own path toward growth and prosperity. Through the leadership of Mercyhurst University president Michael Victor and area business leaders, including Erie Insurance, a Downtown Erie Innovation District has been established to drive a new knowledge-based economy, focused on safety and security, with three of the city’s most innovative corporate partners.

In addition to Erie Insurance, the only Fortune 500 company situated in Erie, Velocity Network, Inc., a burgeoning IT support company providing enterprise-level IT practices and solutions to the small business sector; and McManis & Monsalve Associates, a certified consulting firm that helps organizations improve performance, manage change and mitigate risk. Are involved in the program.

Fueling the plan is a $4 million “Shaping Tomorrow” grant announced Oct. 12 by the Erie Community Foundation.

The partners will execute joint projects related to safety and security, specifically in the high-demand fields of data science and cybersecurity, where their combined skills will create a powerful business alliance and serve as the catalyst for economic growth.
