San Antonio the Place to be for IASA

Robert Regis Hyle | June 07, 2016

The place to be, beginning Sunday, will be San Antonio, Texas where, for four days, the insurance world will congregate to educate, be educated, and mingle with peers at the annual IASA Education Conference and Business Show.

I’m fortunate, being the editor of ITA Pro magazine, to get some early insight into what will happen in Texas next week. The ITA is putting together the IASA Show Daily, which allowed me to speak with and learn more about some of the people who will be leading the discussions there.

What fascinates me is how the differences between the financial side (the first A in IASA is for Accounting) and the technology side (the S is for Systems) have merged so tightly. It is quite possible that some technology people could stumble into a session on the accounting side of the room and not immediately realize it.

For many technology people, this has to be heartening. The divide between the business side and IT may have made sense to some people 20 years ago, but that certainly is not the case today. Both sides need each other in order to make a successful company. It took too long to reach that conclusion, but it appears that no longer is the case.

As usual, IASA has some headline names to address the membership. While these speakers are not all insurance related, it certainly helps for members to emerge from their cocoon every now and then to hear inspirational and timely speakers discuss matters that are important in and beyond the world of insurance.

Anyone who isn’t the least bit curious about what former President of the United States George W. Bush has to say about the upcoming presidential election and his Republican party’s presumptive nominee, Donald Trump, has their head buried in numbers—including zeroes and ones.

Most important at IASA and events such as this is the personal connections made and reinforced each year. While everything around the insurance business seems to be changing, the world of networking has not. Much of it is done electronically these days, but the value of face-to-face connections will never go away.

Besides, on a moonlit night beside the Alamo, you might be able to find your San Antonio Rose.
